The Best Way To Make Money Online 2010: Does Blogging Pay Off?

The buzz about blogging is that it's the internet's best-kept secret and the best way to make money online 2010. But go beneath the surface of the buzz and you will realize: it's not that easy. You can't simply open up a blog on some blogging platform like Wordpress and expect to become independently wealthy.

But as a home internet business owner, you can use blogging in two ways: to promote your company and to generate some additional income. If you love to blog and want to make money doing so, here are three key ways you can use it to earn cash:

Advertising

The majority of blogs make money through advertising. This can be done organically, by adding links to merchants throughout the text of your blog, or it can be more blatant, by allowing advertisers to add banner ads to your website. How you choose to incorporate advertising into your website is entirely your choice: some people find blatant promotions off-putting while others love it. Following are the most common ways to market:

 Advertising programs – there is a vast amount of advertisers out there from whom you can purchase an advertising program for your blog. These campaigns can bring pretty spectacular returns for a minimal amount of cash.
 Sponsorship – with sponsorship, advertisers come directly to you and offer to sponsor your blogs in exchange for plugging their merchandise. Although you may think this rarely happens, it can actually happen to the little guys – or little girls, as was the case for 12-year-old blogger and fashion protégé, The Style Rookie, who recently landed a deal with Target.
 Affiliate Marketing – affiliate marketing is the most common type of advertising in which you allow an advertiser to post ads on your site. In return, you earn a commission for every click on that ad.

Merchandising

Another great way to earn money for your web business through blogs is merchandising. Thanks to sites like Café Press, you can create an entire range of products, from T-shirts to coffee mugs, which promote your blog. In the past, this kind of promotion would require ordering several hundred of one item and selling that inventory. With these new sites, orders are placed and merchandise printed on the spot, saving you literally thousands of dollars.

You can also try printed materials, such as eBooks. One popular blog devoted to stay at home moms offers potty training manuals for a download of $25 each. The blogger gets to keep 100% of the net profits, as opposed to the usual 20% royalties that print authors receive.

Begging

Finally, bloggers can earn money through begging, or to put it more genteelly, requesting donations. There are some applications you can add to your site that act like a virtual tip jar, allowing you to collect donations safely and securely. Although donations may not end up being your bread and butter, they should be considered as a part of any blogger's fund raising plan.

If you have your own online internet business and want to use your power to fund a worthy cause, you can do that too! Many bloggers participate in "blog-a-thons," in which they write as many articles as possible to raise funds in a specified period of time. If you have a cause that you feel your business can help, you can spread the wealth by using your blog to raise funds for that purpose.

People Getting Rich Online - Niche Research

How's that list coming along? You will recall in the first part of this series I covered getting a list together of ideas for your site or blog niche. Hopefully you have a good sized list of general categories. The next steps involve narrowing the keywords and then doing some supply and demand research. There are many keyword tools out there. I like to use Overture's because it's free and easy. Keep in mind that the numbers from Overture are usually inflated — sometimes a little sometimes a lot. They fudge the numbers by counting like queries — fly and flies or affiliate and affiliates get counted as the same query. Remember — they make more money convincing their prospective advertisers that a search term is popular. So plug in one of the general search terms from your list. I'm going to try dogs.
